Plasmonic structures can interact in multiple ways with organic solar cells. However, it is still unclear whether any net benefit can be expected from the incorporation of plasmonic nanostructures in organic solar cells. Using defined particle synthesis and self-assembly, we systematically investigated the influence of plasmonic monolayers on the OPV performance. Only the incorporation at the back electrode led to an increase in performance. This work has been jointly conducted by many groups within the SFB 840 and appeared now in PCCP.
